Int'l Alert Assures Support To Zamfara Govt In Promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution


The Country Director of the  International Alert, an NGO, Mr Paul Nyulaku,  has assured continued support to Zamfara Government in the establishment of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Peace and Conflict Resolution Centers in the state.


Nyulaku stated this while speaking to journalists in Gusau at the One-day Stakeholders review meeting on a Bill for the Establishment of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Peace and Conflict Resolution Centers.


The review meeting  was organized by the Zamfara State Ministry of Justice in collaboration with the International Alert.


The participants of the meeting were drawn from traditional, community and religious leaders, lawyers and media representatives.


Other participants were representatives of the CSOs and NGOs and security agencies, women and youth groups among others.


The aim of the meeting is to build capacity of Zamfara Ministry of Justice on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).



The event was supported by the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) program.


The SPRiNG is an initiative of the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) implemented by Tetra Tech International Development.


Nyalaku noted that the NGO in collaboration with the local partner NGO in the state 'Voluntary Aid Initiative (VAI)' was ever ready and committed to support the state through the funding from the SPRiNG being implemented by the Fetra Tech International Development.



According to him, there is need to use multidimensional approach to settle disputes.


He noted that the Alternative dispute resolution center when establish would provide more opportunity to seek redress.


"The purpose of the meeting is to have inputs from all stakeholders in the administration of justice, to ensure effective provision in access to justice and to ease ways of resolving conflict in the stat


"This meeting is part of the earlier project we implemented in Zamfara and Kaduna State, 


"Promoting Stability, Access to Justice, Accountability and Prevention of Gender Based Violence (GBV)," he added.


He noted that the review also aimed to get stakeholders' input on the bills for the establishment of Multi-Door Court House and also bill for the establishment of Peace and Conflict Resolution Center.


According to him, without justice, we can't have peace, most of the rights of women and children are usually violated during conflicts especially what we are facing in Zamfara.


He further said that the bills will ensure more access to justice for women and children.


These bills will also expand the restoration of justice that will help in healing and reconciliation and addressing the grievances that caused by conflicts.


"You know, when you expand justice is like you are expanding peace.


"We hope, the review of bills would be be well enriched with the perspective of the critical stakeholders before it will be sent to the state house of assembly for passage," Nyulaku explained.


He further explained that the two bills would ensure establishment of institutions as well as peace and conflict resolution mechanism that will help in addressing various grievances caused by conflict.


In a remarks, the State Anthony General and  Commissioner of Justice in the state, Abdul'aziz Sani Muhammad (SAN) represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and Solicitor-General of the state, Barr. Musa Garba Bukkuyum appreciated  International Alert for organizing the event.



Muhammad assured state government's readiness to continue collaborating with the stakeholders 



"We appreciate management of the International Alert  for providing all the support required to carry-out the meeting," the Commissioner said 



He added that the Zamfara Government under Gov. Dauda Lawa has introduced the Small Claims Court into judicial system which has played a pivotal role in enhancing the timely delivery of justice in the State. 


He disclosed that the state government introduced small claims court to enhance timely delivery of justice ,as stakeholders hold review meeting on bill for the establishment of Multi-Door Court House in the state.
